So when COVID-19 struck, making new safety protocols and procedures seem familiar and as similar to existing routines as they could was a top priority. Maria’s music therapist did this by switching their sessions to FaceTime. The library ensures that all their staff receive autism training, so Jennifer believed it would just be a few new staff members from the library. When she arrived, it turned out the library had found the trainings so useful, they invited libraries from four other communities to join them. A big one for Brian was not being able to see his mom in-person due to social distancing. He wasn’t able to see his mother for two months. That is, until Joyce, the Direct Support Professional supporting Brian, noticed that Brian’s mother had an IPhone capable of FaceTime. After a quick lesson for both Brian and his mom, the two were able to see each other! “On their first FaceTime call, Brian’s face lit up when he saw his mom. He sat there a few minutes stunned - we actually thought the screen was frozen!” Joyce said. “He was so overwhelmed and happy to be experiencing their time together.” Now, Brian and his mother are able to FaceTime multiple times a week with Joyce’s help. She was concerned about getting him back into a routine, and also his interactions while at camp with his peers. Ashley helped the mother arrange a Zoom meeting with camp staff to develop a plan, discuss reinforcements, and coping strategies for her son. The biggest challenge for them to overcome was the son falling asleep and staying asleep separately from his mom. Kristin worked with the family to develop a nightly routine and a consistent bedtime. Just a few days of implementing the new routine, his parents reported that their son was falling asleep much easier, and was now staying asleep throughout the night - without mom! Easterseals team member Morgan is working with an 18-year-old young adult in one of our employment programs. Recently, they began focusing on finding the perfect job. With an interest in animal care, Petco became a top choice for the young applicant. Morgan started to show her how to search for positions, fill out a resume, and submit applications. Almost completely independently, our job-seeker found an open position at Petco and applied. Unfortunately, her application was rejected. But that didn’t stop her. She independently found another open position with an animal shelter in her area. She applied, interviewed, and received a job offer! Eventually, Luke became involved with the Self Determination in Action Project, which is a program that teaches individuals with disabilities about their rights, self-advocacy, and independence.
